Lighting waits for no man and this is an industry with plenty of change and developments. We've put together some trends that we expect to see in 2020 along with some key dates in the lighting calendar, should you wish to immerse yourself in all things lighting this year!

2020 lighting predictions

Lighting for well-being

The National Centre for Biotechnology Information explains that the right lighting can produce, "potent biological and therapeutic effects". Apply this to offices, leisure facilities and dining experiences and you can see what a huge influence it can have.

Lighting has long-since been known to be very important in terms of creating mood but its reach in terms of health and well-being is extending into every aspect of our lives. We expect that building design will prioritise the well-being of its inhabitants going forward with lighting being a key component, along with air quality, ventilation, warmth and comfort.

An increase in biophyllic lighting design

Biophyllic simply means incorporating nature. For lighting it is far from simple though as this trend can include everything from using natural materials, recycling and even vegetation and other natural aspects. Natural light is taken to extremes here as we see biophyllic design integrate the natural world into the modern built environment.

This links very neatly with well-being as the benefits of linking people with the outside environment is also very well documented. A design trend includes indoor gardens and grass walls so these, combined with natural lighting, look set to be a big trend this year.

More smart lighting solutions

We have covered smart lighting in previous articles but we expect to see more businesses making use of the efficiencies of smart lighting. Combining your IT with the consumption of your utilities so under-used areas are unlit and well-used areas are appropriately illuminated - simple but so sensible!

A smart building is motivating on many levels but the financial rewards of not wasting money and the environmental benefits of reducing energy consumption go hand in hand. Running a building that operates to its maximum capacity using the least amount of money and energy benefits everyone. Watch out for much more of this in 2020!
