Adding clarity to lighting design

Diamond

When designing lighting for a commercial space it is a clever idea to keep it neutral as far as you can to avoid expensive refits when trends move on. This is a little like painting a room in neutrals and adding an accent colour. But this lighting approach doesn’t have to mean ‘boring’. For neutral but head-turning lighting, an effective way of achieving this is through the use of glass or iridescent fittings.

Clean, clear fittings reflect the light and the result can be incredibly beautiful and effective. Shapes with several surfaces (like a diamond shape for example) reflect all the colours around it and appear to sparkle and catch your eye – it’s like jewellery for your room!

Glass shades and fittings look completely at home in a contemporary setting, whether that is a domestic or commercial space. However, traditional interior designs can also take iridescent lights – think chandeliers (in the traditional sense or with a modern twist).

There is a great echo of the 60s and 70s in a cluster of long straight flexes with matching cylindrical shades, all positioned at different lengths. These look amazing in a high drop such as a shopping centre or hotel with high ceilings or a gallery landing area. The retro trend looks set to stay with us for some time and, importantly, will continue to work with spaces that are updated with new colours and accessories.

On a practical note, it is important to choose the right type of bulb that will work with your designs: long-lasting and the right brightness. This is important as if your bulb is too bright it will dominate the fitting and be all you can see!

Glass can be understated, clean and stylish or it can be bold, geometric and make a statement. However you choose to incorporate it, you can be assured it will have an enduring quality and please the home or business owner for a long time.
