Mood lighting - how important is it?

Working outside

Lighting plays a huge part in setting the scene, creating a mood and creating the right environment for a number of situations. Be it fine dining, a motor showroom or an office, lighting plays a critically commercial role. We all know of places where the lighting is wrong - restaurants that are too bright, supermarkets that are too dull but what is clever (and where we come in obviously) is to design and install lighting that isn't noticed for the wrong reasons. Lighting should be functional, it can be beautiful but, above all, it should be fit for purpose. The amount and wavelength of light affects the brain. The science of this is complex but proven through studies that show that the light levels affect our levels of happiness and productivity.

The impact of having the right kind of lighting to suit our moods (or the moods we want to engender) is vital for business. Restaurants that make people happy make people want to stay longer. Offices with light that mirrors daylight can actually improve the output of its workers, not just because of the physical benefits (no eye strain or headaches) but also the effect of natural daylight on positivity and energy. In a study conducted in Britain and published in “The Responsible Workplace,” it was shown that windows were the number one determinant of the occupants’ level of satisfaction with a building. So where there are inadequate windows, carefully planned lighting is the best solution.
