Back to basics... focus on the LED

We know LEDs are the bulb of choice for today (and the future as far as we can see) but what makes them work, how are they different and what are their benefits?

Well, for the science bit, at a basic GCSE level of knowledge, LED stands for 'light emitting diode'. It is a special kind of diode that glows when electricity passes through it. Most LEDs are made from a semi-conducting material called gallium arsenide phosphide. The light is not particularly bright but it is monochromatic, occurring at a single wavelength.

Before the mid 1990s white LEDs didn't exist so its emergence as a product opened up a whole world of possibilities and applications.

The reasons to opt for LED are well-known as most businesses are quick to change as soon as it is practical.

• LEDs use a lot less power and can be even operated by battery if necessary
Dimming an LED reduces the cost to run it - unlike with a traditional bulb where the cost stays the same
• LEDs are incredibly efficient - you get all the light with minimal heat output
• The reduced heat being omitted from an LED makes them much safer
• The LED epoxy lens is much more durable than the traditional glass bulb
• LEDs last for a very long time - many years, sometimes even over a decade
Less maintenance - because of all the plus points we've listed above!

This makes the LED a very attractive option to businesses, with even the government encouraging adoption through schemes and initiatives to help fund the switch from incandescent or fluorescent lighting options.

It's hard to think of any reasons not to make the change to LEDs. The initial investment might seem expensive but even in the short-term the savings are clear to see. There are a few negatives however. There is concern that LEDs exceed the safe blue-light hazard in eye safety specifications. This will be a much analysed and debated point until a conclusion is reached. The performance of the LED can be affected by the temperature in which it is operating and, of course there is the initial outlay.

At LAUK, collectively, we have many years experience and believe LEDs to be the ideal commercial option but will continue to be mindful of and report back on any new research or advancements in their production, performance and price points.
